g wildness of this octet led by Dag Magnus Narvesen\, the Berlin-based\, f
orty-something Norwegian drummer also frequently heard in a duo with Alexa
nder von Schlippenbach\, in Aki Takase’s Japanic\, or alongside Conny Baue
 r. The tension that this superbly staffed ensemble builds across the eight
compositions of their latest recording\, “Rhizome”\, remains palpable eve
n in its quieter moments—as do the influences ranging from cabaret and big
-band blues to free-flying avant-garde. It is only fitting that this “syst
em of shoot axes growing mostly underground or close to the ground”—the bo
 tanical definition of a “rhizome”—is released on Narvesen’s own label\, “U
mulius”. This name is a neologism derived from “umulig”—meaning 'impossibl
e'—a term often affectionately applied to children perceived as such.
